8 Day Peruvian Amazon Cruise (Low Water Season)

Day 1: Iquitos - Amazon River

Arrive in Iquitos and transfer to the river where the Aria will be waiting for you. Settle into your cabin and explore the impressive amenities as the ship sets sail and your adventure begins! This evening there will be a safety briefing on board, followed by a welcome dinner. Later, enjoy a nightcap on the observation deck, under the stars, before retiring to bed.

Day 2: Amazon - Yarapa - Ucayali River

Rise early this morning to catch the stunning sun rise over the breathtaking Amazon River. Watch this green world fill with wildlife as the area literally comes alive. This is just a glimpse of what your Amazon crusie has to offer. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast, before passing alongside the Yacapana Isles. You will also have the opportunity to go fishing for piranhas with the naturalists. Return to the boat in time for lunch and a quick siesta. Late afternoon sail along Lake Clavero, where villages paddle in their traditional canoes. You will have the opportunity to swim in the lake's calm waters and visit the local community. Return to the Aria for an aperitif before dinner.

Day 3: Yanallpa - Dorado River - Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

After breakfast board skiffs and explore a fascinating black water stream, part of the vast Amazon flooded forest within the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Your guides will tell you about the jungle as you explore what scientists call a "gallery forest," because of its dense vegetation that creates a tunnel of leaves. Return to the Aria for lunch and a siesta. This afternoon take a magical journey through the "Jungle of the Mirrors," where towering trees are reflected in the dark river. Sail along to the Dorado River where you may observe enchanting parrots, macaws and a variety of primates, unperturbed by our presence. As you make your way back to the ship, you may see alligators, frogs and fishing bats.

Day 4: Source of the Amazon - Village - Nauta Town

Rise early this morning and be ready to board your skiff as the Aria cruises along the edge of the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve, a flooded forest covering five million acres at the headwaters of the Amazon basin. Onboard your skiff you will be able to view one of the great spectacles of the Southern Hemisphere: the birthplace of the Amazon River. Here, where the tributaries Ucayali and Marañon meet to form the world's greatest waterway, nature is at its most dramatic. During your early morning excursion you will hear abundant bird song, as you glide past river banks populated by large-billed terns, laughing falcons, gray tanagers, sandpipers, five kinds of parakeets, the exotic short-tailed parrot, and dozens of other birds. Stop at a local village, where you can interact with villagers and learn about their culture, traditions and folklore. After this you will return to the Aria for lunch and then disembark in Nauta for a visit of this village which was founded in the 1930's. Nauta is an important centre for the local river communities, as it is here that they come to sell their produce. Take a walk through the town to get a glimpse of life in a large river community.

Day 5: Yanayacu - Pucate River - Maranon River - Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

After breakfast, board your skiff to explore the Yanayacu, Pucate River, an amazing black water stream which is part of the huge Amazon flooded forest. Here you can observe many species of flora and fauna. Return to the ship for lunch and in the afternoon enjoy a visit to a native village along the great river Maranon. As the sun sets, you will hear the second symphony of the Amazon rainforest, as other nocturnal animals send their shrill calls across the treetops. Return to the boat for dinner.

Day 6: Samiria River - Nauta Cano - Pacaya Samiria

After breakfast, your guide will discuss sustainable development projects in Amazonia. You will then visit one of the projects, where villagers are planting palms to obtain oil. Head into the jungle to encounter wildlife first-hand and discover the value of medicinal plants found here. Return to the ship for lunch. Later enjoy an excursion to Nauta Cano in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, along the Samiria River. You will travel through the "Jungle of the Mirrors," where towering trees are reflected in the dark river. In this area you may observe iguanas, toucans, macaws and many other species. Return to the ship for dinner.

Day 7: Maranon River - Tahuayo - Amazon River

After breakfast the ship sails along the Maranon River where you can observe a rich display of flora and fauna. Arrive at a casual community where you will hike on land observing a a plethora of wildlife. After lunch on board Aria, enjoy an excursion along the Tahuayo river where you may observe local fishermen in their canoes and a plethora of wildlife including tropical songbirds, terns, pipites and hawks. You may also try your hand at fishing for the ferocious piranhas and other species. Return to the ship for dinner and a crew presentation.

Day 8: Iquitos

This morning’s excursion will depend on the water level of the river. Weather-permitting, you will be able to visit the river community at Belen by skiff. Here, at certain times of the year, the houses and shops actually float on the river. You can visit the bustling market, which is where food for the entire Peruvian Amazon is traded. In the late morning return to the ship to pack up and enjoy a final lunch on board. In the afternoon there is a city tour of Iquitos and a visit to the Manatee Rescue Centre, where Biologists and volunteers care for endangered Amazon manatees. You will learn how the manatees are cared for and prepared for release back into their natural habitat. Your final visit of the tour will be to the San Juan Amazonian Indian Market where you can shop for souvenirs before transferring back to the airport in Iquitos.
