8 Day Peruvian Amazon Cruise (High Water Season)

The Aria is a brand new, custom designed, 3 deck, luxury yacht, launched in April 2010. Day 1: Iquitos - Amazon River

Your guide will be waiting for you as your flight lands at Iquitos International Airport. From here you will board an air-conditioned bus and transfer to Iquitos' main wharf, where the Aqua will be waiting. As you settle in to your suite, the ship sets sail towards the Yanayacu River, deep in the heart of Amazonia. Before dinner there will be a routine safety drill and an orientation talk about life on board, where you will go and what you will see on your cruise. This evening there will be a Welcome Dinner on board. Celebrate the start of your Amazonian adventure with a glass of fine South American wine. After dinner you may wish to take a nightcap on the Upper Deck, under the stars, before retiring for the night.

Day 2: Amazon - Yacapana Isles - Yarapa River - Clavero Lake

Rise early this morning to catch the stunning sun rise over the breathtaking Amazon River. Watch this green world fill with wildlife as the area literally comes alive. This is just a glimpse of what your Amazon crusie has to offer. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast, before passing alongside the Yacapana Isles. You will also have the opportunity to go fishing for piranhas with the naturalists. Return to the boat in time for lunch and a quick siesta. Late afternoon sail along Lake Clavero, where villages paddle in their traditional canoes. You will have the opportunity to swim in the lake's calm waters and visit the local community. Return to the Aria for an aperitif before dinner.

Day 3: Ucayali - Yanallpa - Dorado Rivers - Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

You will have an early breakfast before visiting the seasonally flooded forests of Yanallpa, in search of wildlife such as the bald uakari monkey, squirrel monkeys, saddleback tamarin monkeys, sloths and other species. Return to the Aria for lunch and a siesta. Your guides will advise you about the jungle as you explore the 'gallery forest'. This afternoon take a magical journey through the "Jungle of the Mirrors," where towering trees are reflected in the dark river. Sail along to the Dorado River where you may observe enchanting parrots, macaws and a variety of primates, unperturbed by our presence. As you make your way back to the ship, you may see alligators, frogs and fishing bats.

Day 4: Source of the Amazon - Puerto Miguel Village - Nauta Cano

After an early breakfast you will cruise past the edge of the vast Pacaya Samiria Reserve, a flooded forest covering five million acres at the headwaters of the Amazon basin. Take a skiff to view the sun rising over the birthplace of the Amazon River, where the union of two major tributaries, the Ucayali and the Marañón, form the world's greatest waterway, where nature is at its most dramatic. This dawn excursion will be accompanied by bird song, as you glide past river banks with large-billed terns, falcons, sandpipers, grey tanagers, parakeets and the exotic short-tailed parrot. Later this morning travel by skiff to a native village, where you will meet and interact with villagers. They will share their culture, traditions and folklore with you and you will be able to purchase some unique folk art and crafts from them. After lunch the city of Nauta the main centre for villages to sell their Amazonian products. Return to the ship and meet your new passengers at dinner.

Day 5: Maranon River - Yanayacu - Pucate River - Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

After breakfast, board your skiff to explore the Yanayacu, Pucate River, an amazing black water stream which is part of the huge Amazon flooded forest. Here you can observe many species of flora and fauna. Return to the ship for lunch and in the afternoon enjoy a visit to a native village along the great river Maranon. You will also be invited to land where they practice subsistence farming and see how they cultivate wild plants and trees to make a living. After lunch back on the ship, enjoy a jungle walk and village visit. You will travel deep into the forest and discover a wealth of fruit trees and medicinal plants hidden in the jungle. Return to the boat for dinner.

Day 6: Samiria River - Village Visit - Nauta Cano - Pacaya Samiria

After breakfast, your guide will discuss sustainable development projects in Amazonia. You will then visit one of the projects, where villagers are planting palms to obtain oil. Head into the jungle to encounter wildlife first-hand and discover the value of medicinal plants found here. Return to the ship for lunch - on board cooking lessons and lectures can be enjoyed before and after lunch. Later enjoy an excursion deep in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, along the Samiria River. You will travel through the "Jungle of the Mirrors," where towering trees are reflected in the dark river. Return to the ship for dinner.

Day 7: Maranon River - Forest Walk - Yanayacu - Yacapana

After breakfast the ship sails along the Maranon River where you can observe a rich display of flora and fauna. Arrive at a casual community where you will hike on land observing a a plethora of wildlife. After lunch on board Aria, enjoy an excursion to the Yacapana Islands named after the reptiles that inhabit them. Travel by skiff and go in search of the world's largest aquatic plant called Victoria Regia and as the sun goes down, sight the freshwater Amazon dolphins. Return to the ship for dinner and a crew presentation.

Day 8: Iquitos

After your final breakfast, take a morning excursion along the Amazon. See how people live along the river and observe the houses and shops that actually float on the Itaya River for several months of the year. You can visit the bustling market, which is where food for the entire Peruvian Amazon is traded. After lunch visit the Manatee Rescue Centre, where Biologists and volunteers care for endangered Amazon manatees. You will learn how the manatees are prepared for release back into their natural habitat. Your final visit of the tour will be to the San Juan Amazonian Indian Market where you can shop for souvenirs before transferring back to the airport in Iquitos.
